How We Score Every Platform

Every platform on this site receives a single overall score out of 10, built from four weighted criteria applied identically across every review. We publish this weighting openly, rather than keeping it a black box, because a score you can't audit isn't worth trusting.

Course Catalog Depth — 35%

This is the single largest factor in our formula because a platform's catalog is the actual product being sold. We evaluate breadth (how many subject areas are genuinely well covered, not just nominally listed), depth within each subject (whether a learner can progress from beginner to advanced material without switching platforms), instructor credentials (real industry or academic experience, not just a polished camera presence), and content freshness (how often courses are updated to reflect current tools, frameworks, or industry practice). A platform with thousands of courses that are five years stale scores worse here than a smaller platform that keeps its catalog current.

Teaching Quality — 30%

A deep catalog means little if the courses themselves teach badly. We score teaching quality by actually working through course material and assessing structure (does a course build logically from one concept to the next), pacing (is information dumped too fast or padded out with filler), and hands-on practice (are there real exercises, projects, or quizzes that force active engagement, or is it passive video-watching start to finish). Platforms that consistently produce well-structured, practice-heavy courses score meaningfully higher here than platforms that rely on talking-head lectures with no reinforcement.

Platform UX — 15%

How a platform feels to actually use matters, even if it's the smallest weight in our formula. We test navigation on both desktop and mobile, how easy it is to find and resume a course, video player quality and playback controls, and how well progress and notes are tracked across sessions and devices. A platform that makes it hard to find your next lesson or that has a broken mobile app loses points here regardless of how strong its course content is.

Price & Certificates — 20%

Price alone isn't the whole story, which is why we score it together with certificate value. We look at whether pricing is transparent and predictable (subscription, per-course, or a confusing mix), whether free trials or audit modes genuinely let you evaluate content before paying, and — critically — whether the certificate you earn is recognized by employers or accrediting bodies, or is essentially decorative. A platform charging a premium for a certificate with limited real-world recognition scores lower here than a cheaper platform whose certificate genuinely opens doors.

Qualitative Factors We Weigh Beyond the Score

Some things resist a clean numeric score but still shape the written verdict on each review: how responsive and knowledgeable a platform's support team is when we actually contact them, whether the mobile app supports real offline access or just claims to, and how a platform handles subscription cancellations and refunds. These factors don't move the numeric score directly, but they're always discussed in the review text itself, since they can matter enormously depending on how you plan to use a platform.

Review Update Policy

We don't test a platform once and leave the score frozen indefinitely. We re-test continuously throughout the year and refresh a platform's score whenever it changes its pricing, meaningfully expands or lets its catalog go stale, or restructures its certificate programs. Fast-moving platforms with frequent catalog and pricing changes get revisited more often than slower-moving ones, and every review page reflects the date of its most recent update.

Why Independent Testing Matters Here

The online learning market is full of comparison sites that either republish vendor marketing copy verbatim or generate rankings without anyone actually completing a course. We think that's a disservice to learners spending real money and real time on a decision. Every score on this site reflects genuine hands-on use, and we'd rather publish a smaller number of thoroughly tested platforms than a sprawling list padded with names nobody on our team has actually used.

What This Methodology Doesn't Capture

No formula perfectly captures whether a specific course will click with a specific learner's background and learning style. Our scores are a strong, consistent starting point for comparing platforms objectively, but we'd still encourage reading the full written review for any platform you're seriously considering — that's where nuance the numbers can't carry, like how a particular instructor teaches or how a specific certificate has actually landed with employers, gets explained in full.
