Understanding the Rating Table
The table above ranks every online learning platform we've tested using the same weighted formula described in full on our Methodology page: course catalog depth contributes 35% of the final score, teaching quality 30%, platform UX 15%, and price & certificates 20%. That weighting is deliberate — catalog depth and teaching quality together make up two-thirds of the score because they determine whether a platform actually teaches you something worthwhile, while UX and price matter but shouldn't be able to outweigh raw educational value.
Why the Order Sometimes Surprises People
A platform with a bigger course catalog or a lower price isn't automatically ranked higher here, and that catches some readers off guard. A platform boasting thousands of courses but shallow, rarely-updated content in most of them can't make up the difference against a more focused platform with fewer courses that are consistently well taught. We'd rather rank a platform that reliably delivers strong instruction in its core subjects above one with an impressive catalog number and inconsistent quality.
How Often We Update the Numbers
Online learning platforms change constantly — new courses launch, older ones get pulled or refreshed, pricing shifts, and certificate programs get restructured. We re-test continuously and update a platform's score whenever it changes its pricing, meaningfully expands or lets its catalog go stale, or overhauls its certificate offering. If a rank shifts between visits to this page, it's because the underlying platform changed, not because of a site redesign.
Filtering by What Actually Matters to You
The topic and price filters above the table exist because "best online learning platform" isn't one answer across programming, design, marketing, languages, business, data science, and beginner-friendly learning. Filter by topic first to see platforms with genuinely deep catalogs in what you actually want to study, then by price if budget is a hard constraint, then by free-plan availability if you want to sample content before committing to a subscription.
Reading a Score Correctly
A score of 9.1 versus 8.8 is a real but small difference in practical terms. Where the gap matters more is at the extremes: a platform scoring above 9 has cleared nearly every criterion we test with consistently strong catalog depth and instruction, while a platform scoring below 7 usually has a specific, documented weakness worth reading about in its full review — whether that's a shallow catalog outside its flagship subjects, inconsistent teaching quality, or a certificate program with limited real-world recognition.
What This Page Does Not Tell You
The rating table is a starting point, not the whole picture. It can't tell you how a specific instructor's teaching style will land with you personally, whether a course you care about was recently refreshed or hasn't been touched in years, or how a platform's mobile app actually performs on your specific device. That's exactly what the full reviews linked from each row are for, and we'd encourage reading at least the top two or three platforms in your topic before deciding between ones that score within a point of each other.
Comparing This Table to Other Rankings
You'll find online-learning rankings elsewhere that disagree with ours, sometimes significantly, and that doesn't automatically mean either list is wrong. Different outlets weight criteria differently — some lean almost entirely on brand recognition or course volume and barely account for teaching quality or certificate value, others fold in sponsored placement dressed up as an organic ranking. If a ranking elsewhere looks very different from ours, check what it's actually weighting, and whether it discloses sponsored placements, before assuming either list is inaccurate.
